How To Use Lifting Straps For Maximum Gains

News 11/28/2024

Alright, listen up, y’all. You wanna lift them heavy things, but your hands ain’t strong enough? Well, I’m gonna tell ya ’bout these here lifting straps, see? They ain’t magic, but they sure do help when your grip gives out before your muscles do.

What are these lifting straps anyway?

They’re just pieces of cloth or leather, kinda like tough shoelaces, but way stronger. You wrap ’em ’round your wrists and the bar, and they help you hold on tight. Simple as that.

When to use ’em?

  • When you’re lifting real heavy weights, like them deadlifts. You know, the ones where you pick the bar up off the ground? Yeah, those.
  • Pull-ups too, if you’re doing ’em with extra weight. Your hands get tired afore your back does, these straps help with that.
  • And shrugs, them shoulder things. If you’re holdin’ heavy dumbbells, your grip can go weak, so straps are good for that too.

Basically, if your hands are givin’ out before the muscles you’re tryin’ to work, that’s when you use these straps. Don’t be usin’ ’em all the time though, you gotta let your hands get strong on their own, see?

How to put ’em on, now this is important

It ain’t rocket science, but you gotta do it right. There’s two ways, dependin’ on how you hold the bar.

Overhand Grip: If your palms are facin’ down, the strap goes under the bar, see? You make a loop, stick your hand through, and then wrap it tight around the bar. Like you’re tyin’ a knot, but not too tight, you still gotta let go after you’re done liftin’.

Underhand Grip: If your palms are facin’ up, the strap goes over the bar. Same kinda loop and wrap, just the other way around. It might feel a little funny at first, but you’ll get the hang of it.

Some tips from an old gal:

When you’re just startin’ out, use your other hand to wrap the strap around the bar. It’s easier that way. Once you get good at it, you can do both hands at the same time, no problem. And don’t go yanking on them straps right away. Get a good grip on the bar first, then tighten the straps. You want the straps to help you hold on, not do all the work for ya.

Don’t be a fool, use ’em right

And listen here, these straps ain’t for everythin’. You gotta build up your grip strength too. If you use these straps all the time, your hands will stay weak. Use ’em when you need ’em, but don’t be lazy. And for goodness sake, make sure them straps are good and strong. Don’t go usin’ no flimsy things, they might break on ya and then you’ll be in a real pickle.

So there you have it

Lifting straps ain’t complicated. They’re just tools to help you lift more weight. Use ‘em right, and you’ll be liftin’ heavier in no time. But remember, strong hands are important too, so don’t forget to work ‘em out every now and then. Now go on and lift them weights, but be careful, ya hear?

One last thing

There’s different kinds of straps, some are made of cotton, some of leather, some are thicker, some are thinner. Try out a few and see what you like best. It’s all about what feels comfortable and works for you. And don’t be afraid to ask someone at the gym for help if you’re confused. Most folks are happy to lend a hand, especially to a sweet old lady like me… or like someone like me.

Anyways, get to liftin’, and remember what I told ya!
