This lift thing, you know, the box that goes up and down in them big buildings. My grandson, he’s a smart one, always on that computer thing. He told me all ’bout it. Says I gotta write it down, make it so folks can find it easy on the… on the whatchamacallit… the Google thing. So, here goes nothing. This is about that lift machine room height.

First off, that room where all the noisy stuff is, the machine room, it’s gotta be tall enough. Not like a chicken coop! Gotta be able to stand up straight, like a proper person. They say it needs to be 7 feet tall, least that’s what that paper says. Seven feet, that’s taller than most doors! Makes sense, I guess. You don’t want to be bumping your head on them machines. It sounds like a big space for machines.

And it ain’t just about being tall. Gotta have a light in there, too. Can’t be fumbling around in the dark, tripping over wires and whatnot. And a switch, gotta have a switch to turn that light on and off. Makes sense, right? You wouldn’t want to leave the light on all the time, wasting all that electric. My grandson, he always tells me to turn off the lights. Smart boy.

Now, this here part is important. That machine room, it can’t be too hot, can’t be too cold. Just like Goldilocks and them bears, gotta be just right. They say between 55 and 90, them fancy numbers. Means you gotta keep it warm in the winter, cool in the summer. All them machines, they need to be taken care of, I reckon. Otherwise, they might break down, and then where would you be? Stuck between floors, that’s where!

And what’s in that room, anyway? Well, lots of things. Big, noisy things, I imagine. They call ’em “drives” and “controllers.” Sounds complicated to me. But they’re the things that make the lift go up and down, so I guess they’re pretty important. Like the heart of the whole thing. And that’s where you find the main stuff, the boss of the whole operation, making sure everything runs smooth.

Now, you can have these machine rooms with different kinds of lifts. There’s the ones that use water, they call them hydraulic. It is like my well. And then there’s the ones with ropes, I think. They call ’em traction, like a tractor pulling a plow. It is like pulling something by rope. Both of ’em need a machine room.

They got these new rules now, too. Always changing things, these young folks. Says the doors, the ones to get into the machine room and that shaft thing, they gotta be big, too. Not just any door, no sir. Gotta be at least 2 meters high. That’s even taller than me! And not too skinny, either. 0.6 meters wide, they say. Wide enough for a fella to get through, carrying tools and whatnot. Those are big doors! It is not like the door of my house.

They even got rules for the pulley room doors. Whatever that means. Probably where they keep all them ropes and wheels. Sounds dangerous to me. Best leave that to the experts, I say. And all these numbers! 81-20, overrun height, lift code. My head’s spinning just thinking about it. But I guess it’s important to know these things if you’re gonna be messing with lifts.

And then there’s this other thing. Ventilation. Fancy word for keeping the air moving, I reckon. Gotta have that in the machine room, too. Keep it from getting too stuffy. They say it can’t get hotter than 40. Don’t want them machines overheating, no sir. And they talk about AC, like the air conditioner in my son’s house. Single phase AC220V. I think that’s some kind of electricity. It is too professional for me. Keeps the air cool, I guess. Important for them machines.

But if you’re gonna be building one of them fancy buildings with a lift, you better pay attention. It ain’t as simple as it looks. Lots of rules and regulations. But I guess that’s what keeps us safe, right? Keeps us from getting stuck between floors. And that’s a good thing, I reckon.
